Barrel aged beer is the new black… or at least this past week it was.
In the last week we filled some more barrels with beer, now to just let them rest in a quiet space in the brewery. For how long, we don’t know yet.
Barrel ageing is the new black 🙂
Since we started Beerbliotek, our goal has always been to brew new beer. But what if you could make new beer, without actually brewing it. That’s where barrel ageing comes in. You brew a beer and take 200 litres and fill a barrel with it. How long it stays in the barrel depends on which type of barrel it is, and what you’re aiming to achieve.
Most of the beers that we’ve barrel aged have been dark high alcohol beers. Stouts, Porters, Barley Wines, etc.
Our first barrel aged beer was our collaboration with All In Brewing called ”Ales in Wineyland”, where we aged 200 litres in Bourbon Barrels. 200 litres of our Wheat Wine was aged in a Oak Barrel for 6 months. 140 litres of our Baltic Porter was part of a collaboration with Mackmyra Swedish Whisky, where we had two barrels of different Oak, one French Oak, the other Swedish Oak. Eternal Darkness and the Barrel Aged version in a can beside it, which we canned in the past month.
This last week we prepared some barrels at our Sockerbruket Sour Brewery and filled them with our base Saison beer and then pitched with a mixed culture of Brettanomyces and bacteria. We’ve not decided on how long the beer will be kept in the barrels, but it’s going to be in there till after Christmas at least.
We’ve still got a few barrels left and some plans for them, but nothing we’re going to reveal yet 😉
The evolution of Hip Hops
Hip Hops IPA is part of our core range, and although it is number 49, it has pretty much been with us since the start. This can be seen in the changes that the packaging has gone through. From our initial labels, to the new labels and design, all the way to a can.
It’s one of four of our beers that are in pre-printed cans. I personally prefer pre-printed cans, because of how they look, but we’ve been launching small batches of canned beers, which means we’re labelling them ourselves.
Our first beer festival in Eastern Europe
As of today, we have beer in fourteen countries around the world. The last country to join us is Serbia, and also the first Eastern European country. There’s been a lot of interest from Eastern Europe and it looks like the Craft Beer Revolution has also spread to that part of the world.
The Carousel * First International Beer Festival will be held in Belgrade, Serbia from 29-30 October, and although we won’t be present in person, our beer will be.
Over 40 foreign brewers, more than 150 beers from 15 countries will share their experience of the past 20 years, and for the first time in Serbia, with the support of local brewers, will spin your senses.
